Artwork Description:
The Soviet Union, the world's largest country by territory, collapsed in 1991. This outcome was precipitated by the widespread exposure of the Soviet population to the systemic weaknesses of the Communist system, a process accelerated by Mikhail Gorbachev’s reforms. These reforms enabled broad and uncensored access to the advanced cultural and technological products of Western capitalist countries. Nicholaas Chiao commented on this period, stating, '1991 was a year of tremendous change; witnessing the fall of a mammoth system that had shaped so many lives was both daunting and inspiring.'
