Artwork Description:
Nicholaas Chiao’s drawing examines the composition and function of human internal organs by deliberately presenting them in unconventional arrangements. This artistic choice blurs anatomical norms, prompting viewers to question conventional understandings of bodily structure and to engage with the implications of anatomical displacement in favor of engagement with compositional aspects and visual decor, such as the heart situated outside its expected position or the digestive system rendered as a pointillist structure of repetitions and rhythms. Through these visual strategies, Chiao critically explores how the body can be transformed or abstracted in art, thereby prompting reflection on broader questions of material and conceptual identity. This approach illustrates how Chiao employs distortion to investigate themes of transformation and self-examination, deepening his ongoing dialogue about identity, corporeality, and the ever-changing boundaries of the self.
