Artwork Description:
This composition, titled 'Love Attack,' features television sets transformed into uncontrollable, aggressive war machines that disseminate military propaganda and initiate attacks.

Nicholaas Chiao employs visual mutations to represent the aggressive nature of media, transforming antennae into armaments, fists, screaming heads, and automatic rifles, and screens into hearts that glare with intent. These details reinforce the critique of the media’s capacity to escalate and incite conflict. Chiao's work draws upon a rich art-historical tradition of media critique, referencing earlier interventions such as John Heartfield’s photomontages, which confronted Nazi propaganda in the Weimar era, as well as the subversive strategies of the Dada movement, which emerged during the aftermath of World War I as a direct challenge to institutional authority and mass media manipulation. By positioning Chiao’s weaponized televisions as a contemporary extension of these historic commentaries, the drawing situates itself within an ongoing discourse about the power dynamics embedded in visual culture, now intensified by the algorithmic dissemination of information in the digital era. This metaphor underscores the persistent power and danger of media manipulation, connecting Chiao’s work to a lineage of artists who have interrogated the intersection of technology, propaganda, and societal influence.
